28 Days in London
Sean Chard (Open University UK)

For four weeks
I waited, stared on

sublunary streets, through
dust hazed glass, saw the world

pass by on-foot, on upscale
street bikes, on red worktrotter buses.

Watched the lost-in-thought,
the cellphone junkies, the noise cancelled.

For four weeks
I waited, stared out,

watched breezes break on raw umber oaks,
saw them swing-by iron gates, thresh through mourning willows.

Eyed the deep pocket disciples,
the insatiate suits, the industrial fun seekers.

For four weeks
I waited, gazed at

rain through a hundred thousand
tiny windows, watched

the rainshade runners,
the scooter surfers, the broken sans-abri.

For four weeks
I waited, looked out on

this world of lipsticked cigarette butts,
and smeared wine flutes.

I watched time pass, watched it disappear, as
nothing changed in a month of Sundays.
