I Close My Eyes
Jacqui Wise (University of Technology, Sydney, Australia)
.
.
My earliest memory
floats too close for me to focus.
.
Hints scent the morning
fitful as butterflies,
.
dart behind motes, evade
in spindrifts of time.
.
I close my eyes to see
powdered wings chafe
.
winter’s hot breath,
and in its vanishing wake
.
warm tears, wet cheeks, her neck,
her Oil of Ulan,
.
a terry-towelling robe.
.

Jacqui Wise, who is soon to complete the Master of Arts in Creative Writing at the University of Technology, Sydney, (UTS), thought herself a prose writer until she discovered poetry. This is Jacqui’s second poem to be published—the first was published earlier this year in the twenty-fifth UTS Writer’s Anthology, The Life You Chose and That Chose You.
