Tumble weed
Kezia Perry (University of Adelaide, Australia)

.

.

Among the hedges of our house, my son hides
Among the cupboards, he is a sapling nymph.
Among thin boards and drums in our shed, he laughs
Among my boys, he is the kindest.

Among my day, I grow weary with chores,
Among the vacuum’s chug and the bills
Among the phone calls to the plumber, I forget,
Among the house, my son stowed away, waits.

Among the police, my husband, I seek one sound.
Among the sirens, the thud of the lid when I open the door,
Among the pity when my legs give way.
I die among our warm clothes.
