Great Grandfather
Karen Powell (Nottingham Trent University, UK)

We first met in Walthamstow when Walter
married Alice – Easter Sunday, nineteen-
fifteen. Next time was in January
eighteen-eighty-eight when you and Mary
Ann registered Walter’s birth in Little
Ilford. Three years later, we met again
with Maria Anne, your children – Lily,
Percy, Walter. I searched through Essex
and Kent until I found you newborn
in Lewisham but couldn’t witness your
wedding vows to Marianne or find
Rosetta. Every ten years I hunted,
hoping for answers to stories half-lost
in the gap between our generations.
