Poem for My Sweetheart
Dave Nielsen (Cincinnati University, USA)

We’re sitting on the couch by the shelves of books.
Hear the air go off. So silent in the rest of the house,
a buzzing in our ears like grasshoppers.

And then the couch begins to levitate,
and our hands begin to glow, little shafts of light
shooting from each finger. And here the scientists and agnostics

will think we’re bluffing: the books fly out of their shelves,
one at a time, flapping their covers like wings.
White light crisscrossing the air, the way you see at a premiere,

only from our fingers. So many books we think we love,
swooping around our heads. Now and then one losing control
and smashing against the wall—

If only we’d had a camera, if only we’d stayed calm.
