Heat

Hear ye, hear ye, SWAMP Issue 34 reporting for duty!

The Heat was certainly turned up for this one, with a series of scorchers slamming into our inbox like hot little bullets. Tales of fiery conflagration and steamy romances abound here, so tread cautiously and watch you don’t get burned! These stories and poems are hot in unexpected and unconventional ways as well, from the wild and surreal prose in Nic Van Der Haar’s The Great Theatre of War, to the sparky rhymes of Ashby Neterer’s The Runaway — our Issue 34 contributors really fanned the flames of their imaginations to create a firestorm of goodness like never before! So go on, pull on your flame resistant suit and wade in—if you think you can handle the heat, that is.

It is also with great sadness that I announce the end of my tenure as SWAMP’s Editor-in-Chief. The life of a post-grad, as we all know, can be a demanding one, and the current demands associated with getting my thesis written (I’ll be done soon, mum, I swear!) are becoming just a little too heavy to juggle for the time being. My thanks to everyone on the team, as well as to all our wonderful contributors who make this journal possible. It’s been an incredible ride, my love to you all!

Denni Martin, previous Head of Poetry, will be taking over the captain’s chair. Best of luck, Denni, in your new role!

Submissions are now open for Issue 35. The theme we’ve settled on is ‘Small Worlds’. We want to hear about chance encounters, stories of friends of friends, and of the strange little situations that arise when people bump into each other in strange little places. All of us have experienced that odd sensation of: “Oh, you work with X? I know them through Y! Which makes us…Z?” We want to see those connections manifested on the page, no matter how tenuous or strenuous, and no matter where in the world they take place. So give us your best shot!

Submissions will close 22 May 2025. The SWAMP team looks forward to reviewing your work.
